Safe in the Sun
18th May 2004
Dear ParentsYes, it's that time of year when we start to look forward to better weather and how to keep safe in the sun.
Please make sure your child is dressed in uniform that provides protection for shoulders and if your child is particularly sensitive carry on wearing long sleeved shirts or blouses. Children may wear sunhats or caps that are plain and suitable for school [ remember to name all clothing, including hats]. Children may not wear sunglasses without written assurance from you that the glasses have lenses with ultra violet filtration,play sunglasses are not suitable or safe. Please remember that children should wear shoes or sandals that provide foot support. Beach and play shoes such as jellies, trainers or slip on shoes without back support are not suitable or school wear and can be dangerous and unsafe out in the playground. Also remember children will need a change of shoe to wear on the adventure playground. Check with your child for the day that their class is allocated a turn.
It is very important in hot weather that children drink plenty of fluid. Water is
available at all times and your child may refill a water bottle during the course of the day. Please send in a see-through, named bottle. The children are encouraged to drink as much as they wish with their lunch,if you provide a packed lunch please include squash rather than a concentrated juice drink.
We will monitor the weather forecasts and ensure that children do not stay outside beyond the stated 'burn time'. Thanks to your generosity the children now have shaded areas in the playground and are encouraged to stay in the shade as far as possible between 11 and 3. Please help us by applying factor 15+ sunscreen to exposed areas of skin before your child comes into school. You may send this in for your child to apply again in particularly hot weather, please ensure the sunscreen is named, for health and safety reasons. Children are not allowed to share sunscreen.
The school nurse is coming to take a school assembly on Sun Safety and there are many websites giving advice : www.sunsmart.org.uk; www.kidshealth.org;
www. connexions-direct.com
The children are learning how to be SMART
Stay in the shade between 11-3
Make sure you never burn
Always cover up with a hat and sleeves
Remember children burn more easily
Then use lots of factor 15+ sunscreen
If we are careful then summer will be an enjoyable time for all.
Yours sincerely
